4 Workforce Training Initiatives in Greater Newport

The Greater Newport Region is packed with educational institutions and ranks among the most educated in New England. Our local colleges, universities, high schools, and tech and career programs offer degrees and certifications that meet the ever-growing workforce needs of Rhode Island. Students are provided with opportunities to learn the skills needed to pursue careers in some of the fastest growing industries including defense, cyber security, technology, and marine trades.
Although, there is a continuous pipeline of talent, employers are not always aware or connected to the great resources and training programs this region has to offer. Over the last few weeks Connect Greater Newport had the opportunity to tour some of the amazing facilities and learn about the education-workforce collaborations the area.

Workforce Training and Initiatives
1. Salve Regina University Standout Program: Cyber Security
Newport based Salve Regina University offers 58 undergraduate and graduate degree programs and 25 certificate programs with over 2800 students enrolled annually. A notable offering is the “Cyber @ Salve” Cyber Security Center. Salve offers two graduate level programs with Cyber Security concentrations and three certification programs. Additionally, students in any undergraduate program can take on an interdisciplinary concentration in cyber resiliency. With the ever changing world of technology, Salve is preparing the next generation workforce to better support our business community.
2. Roger Williams University
Standout Program: School of Law (Rhode Island's only Law School!)
Bristol’s Roger Williams University has over 45 undergraduate majors, 12 master’s degree programs, 3 dual degree programs, 8 certificates and is home to Rhode Island’s only Law School. In Addition to conventual educational offerings, Roger Williams provides opportunities through the University College program which is designed to serve all learners. From job training and professional development programs to flexible and alternative options aimed to help students overcome barriers and challenges, Roger William’s is committed to educating Rhode Island’s workforce.
3. Community College of Rhode Island
Standout Program: Cyber Security Training Program
The Community College of Rhode Island’s (CCRI) Newport location is conveniently located in the city’s up and coming North End. CCRI offers affordable options for Rhode Island’s future workforce to obtain training and certifications. CCRI Newport offers 12 degree or certificate programs and is known as the most technologically advanced community college campus in Rhode Island. The location and resources of the campus enabled CCRI Newport in collaborate with Roger High School and the Southeastern New England Defense Industry Alliance (SENEDIA) to receive a Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-Tech) grant. This cyber security training program helps fast track student to a career in the defense industry.
4. Newport Area Career and Technical Center
Standout Program: Cyber Security P-Tech program
Newport Area Career and Technical Center is the region’s only career and tech education program for high school students. Housed in Newport’s Rogers High School, NACTC prepares students for careers in Technology, Advertising, Design & Media, Automotive, Culinary Arts and Construction. NACTA is also home to the Cyber Security P-Tech program, which provided students the opportunity to graduate with both a high school diploma and an associate degree in 4 years. Although, the location of the program is within the Newport School District students from all municipalities in Rhode Island can apply.
